Chibi Cheerleaders from Space

February 5, 2009

I do not know what happened yesterday as far as posting. Completely spaced on it.

Maybe I was too busy reading this weird little webcomic that I came across yesterday. I’m still digging through the archives (all 143 pages of it) but I’ll offer a first impressions.

The webcomics is called Chibi Cheerleaders from Outer Space.

The basic plot line that I’ve surmised here is that a group of six or so college age students come across a new anime with the same title as the comic. Apparently this anime is a brainwashing show that convinces people to help the chibi cheerleaders who actually exist, only instead of being cute like in the anime they’re very evil and on a quest of galactic domination.

So far, the story is erractic and linear simultaneously. There’s enough there to get the gist of what’s going on but at the same time there doesn’t seem to be enough character development before all the males start going crazy and the lone unaffected girl begins to realize what’s going on.

The idea is charming and manga enough that most rabid anime/manga fans could get behind it but it fails me.

Mostly it’s because the characters are so shallow that I find myself rooting for the chibi cheerleaders because the people that I’m supposed to care about are just annoying. If the “heroine” just comes across as aloof, bitchy and oh-so-smart, while still being intensly naive.

The art does get better as the story goes on but it’s still somewhat left of right as it were.

Check it out for yourself if you like Chibis that is.

    Hey there,

I just found out about your review of our webcomic. I just wanted to thank you for checking it out, and for providing this honest review of the story so far. It’s always good to get an idea on where the comic stands with people. 🙂

    Thanks again!
