Well then

August 25, 2008

Hopefully this week of homelessness will be better suited to posting than last week’s moving all the time. Who knew that you couldn’t fit 80% of 2 bedroom apartment in a van? Not me.

I have two hopes today. The first one you’ve already read and the second one is that I hope the videos I found for you guys last week were interesting or funny. If not my apologies but I liked them. Except for that DBZ AMV of course, I probably shouldn’t have posted the actual video. Oh well.

It feels like I’ve been on a vacation from this thing. I had a hard time coming up with something to write about today, despite my list from two Fridays ago.

So I bring you, Rocko’s Modern Life.

Seems to me that when I was a kid this show was risque and hilarious, mostly because my parents thought it was stupid. At times yes, it was stupid but it was a better than Ren and Stimpy a show that I’ve always felt was like watching worthlessness infest your television like a cancer.

If you haven’t seen it or don’t remember let me recap Rocko for you:

Rocko’s Modern Life was a cartoon on Nickelodeon during the early and mid nineties. Apparently, it was nominated for an Emmy at one point. I’m not really sure why but that’s cool.

The main characters that the show follows are Rocko an Australian wallaby adjusting to life in the States, his friend Heffer a steer who lives with a family of wolves, Filbert a neurotic turtle, and Rocko’s neighbors who hate him, the Big-Heads. Also, Rocko owned a dog, Spunky.

It delved into some more “adult” themes during it’s time on the air and really seemed to be not just for kids despite its Nickelodeon slot. It kind of amazes me that shows like Rocko and Ren and Stimpy got such heavy air time from Nickelodeon. Considering that they were also running Rugrats and Doug around hte same time. All four shows were successful but it’s moves like this that make me miss the old Nickelodeon.

The art and animation of Rocko is done in a style that is uniquely 90s, in a way, you could argue that most cartoons from the 1990s had a similar look and feel with their animation.

I managed to find the first 5 minutes of the pilot episode on youtube. Check it out and then I’ll leave you with my recommendation.

My Recommendation: Take this one with a grain of salt. It was hilarious when I was 10 but it doesn’t follow that bill as much. It has its moments but it might be one of those shows best left to nostalgia.
